Wha Ti
Marten Lake (Lac La Martre) Pop. 500
Set on a magnificent
and productive lake the Dogrib community of Wha Ti is a destination
featuring great fishing and very attractive crafts. Visitors connect
from Yellowknife via scheduled flights, or in winter, a 145 km ice
road from Highway 3 at Rae. The many old log homes in the older
part of the community give an old world feel to this attractive
community.
Theres a small
hotel, co-op general store and a health center. Several kilometres
away on the shore of the lake, theres a comfortable camp for
trout fishing enthusiasts. Close to the community, a small rapid
provides good grayling fishing, guided by local residents.
Lac La Martre is one
of the larger lakes in Northern Frontier located on one of North
Americas main north/south bird migration routes. In spring
and fall hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese and other migratory
species gather here in the marshes to feed. Local guides will provide
transportation.
Craftspeople produce
attractive beaded jackets, mitts, gloves and moccasins, available
through the co-op store.
Liquor is prohibited in the community.
