Gameti

Rabbit-net Lake – (Rae Lakes) Pop. 300

Many of Gameti’s buildings are constructed of local logs, offering an aspect of welcoming and distinctive charm.

Visitors can fly to Gameti year round on scheduled flights from Yellowknife or drive a 100 km winter ice road from Highway 3 near Rae (January to March). There’s a small hotel, general store, health centre and a large community hall.

The Gameti Development Corporation offers guiding services to visitors who wish to fish, or just explore the natural world in this scenic area.

Fine Dogrib style beaded or embroidered clothing and traditional snowshoes can be purchased from local craftspeople through the general store. Local musicians, the Gameti drummers, travel to many regional events and celebrations.

Situated between two pretty lakes, Gameti is midway between Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes in a traditional hunting area of the Dogrib and Sahtudene peoples. Although the site was long used as a temporary camp, in the 1970s an airstrip, school, store and new log houses were built, and families settled here.

Traditional subsistence hunting and fishing are still practiced here, although some families have opted for rotational employment with the diamond mines. Alcohol is prohibited by community plebiscite.
